-Carmine Fazio is a young immigrant from Naples, Italy.-
Carmine Fazio was born in Naples, Italy in 1880 to Maria Fazio and Vinchenzo Fazio. Carmine lived in a crowded house with his grandmother and parents. Carmine was a single child thus leading him to spend a lot of time with his family, especially his grandmother. His grandmother was a very smart and independent woman. After her husband Severino Basonili died in 1875, Carmine’s grandmother dealt with her grief by spending time with her family as well as cooking family meals. In Carmine’s household, a tradition was set in place a few years after Carmine’s grandfather passed. Every sunday, the whole family would come together at Carmine’s house and Carmine’s grandmother would make sunday dinner, usually consisting of homemade bread, tomato soup, risotto, polenta, certain pasta dishes, cannolis, and much more. This was a very sacred tradition within the family and made the family more close with each other over time. When Carmine turned just 6 years old, in 1886, Carmine’s grandmother began teaching Carmine out to cook. By the time Carmine was 7 years old he was assisting Carmine’s grandmother heavily every sunday with the dinners. Carmine would help grow and maintain home grown produce as well as make bread with his grandmother every day of the week. This is when Carmine’s love for culinary arts began. As Carmine began primary school in Naples, Italy, he would often sit during class dreaming about going home and helping his family cook and because of this, his academic career took a turn for the worst. To Carmine, he didn’t care about grades, tests or any of that. The only thing that mattered to Carmine, was how to improve his culinary dishes. In the year of 1892, when Carmine turned 12 years old, his family was under financial stress and unfortunately were on the brink of losing their home. Carmine’s father suffered a workplace injury and was unable to work for a few months. This collapsed the family. Stress, arguments and reality all began to pile up on Carmine’s plate. Naturally because of this Carmine turned to the only thing he knew, cooking. Carmine began obsessing over the art of culinary and it was in that moment when he knew his life needed direction. Carmine decided right then and there that he wanted to move to America and start his own business to help support his parents. There was one problem with this, one major problem, Carmine’s parents didn’t speak a lick of English due to poor education, nor did they have the funds to move the family over to America. Carmine’s father during this time was not as present as he once was. He began drinking heavily and staying out late, gambling and doing god knows what else. This had an even more effect on the family than the financial stress they were enduring. Arguments began to rise and heat up more than often, sometimes ending in his father not returning for days on end. Although the family was growing apart, they all came together every Sunday for the delightful meals Carmine and Carmine’s grandmother would make.

The following years weren’t easy for Carmine or his family. In the year 1898 Carmine graduated primary school and knew this was the time for him to make some change in his life. Carmine didn’t want to be a bricklayer or a factory worker, Carmine wanted to move to America and start his own restaurant. So he did. In late fall, Carmine said his goodbyes to his family. This was news to them, but they understood Carmine wanted a new life for himself. Carmine’s grandmother was ever so excited about Carmine’s new journey to the states. His mother wasn’t the happiest but she knew that Carmine would make something of himself and for that she allowed it. By this time Carmine’s father was mostly absent. He began working more and staying out later. Most of the time if he would come home, it was only for a few hours, before he went back to whatever Brothel or Saloon he was previously at. Carmine was sent off on a beautiful boat filled with hopeful and excited Italians, all on their way to what was known as the dream land, America. Carmine landed in a bright, big new city called Saint Denis in a wonderful state called Monroe. Carmine would settle in a cheap apartment in the less fortunate area of Saint Denis, but to Carmine, this was already better than being in Naples. He had his own room, electricity, and even more importantly, his own kitchen. Carmine began looking for work. He jumped around a few of the industrial buildings in the nearby area, but wouldn’t stay for more than a few weeks. By this time, Carmine was very eager to get his foot in the doors of the Culinary Industry. Carmine took it upon himself to get to work. The year was now 1899, Carmine had been working odd jobs for months to get some money saved up to fund his new venture. Carmine had saved his grandmother’s recipes in an old torn notebook. As he opened the notebook, his eyes were glowing and his mind was set. Carmine was going to begin cooking and selling his grandmother’s Tomato Soup. He would call it Carmine’s Soup. Carmine can now be found in Saint Denis. He spends a lot of his time farming and cooking. He had perfected the recipe for his grandmother’s tomato soup and everyone in the town seemed to love it. You may find posters around Saint Denis advertising and spreading the word of Carmine’s Tomato Soup.
